TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
Over the years, Oz has grown and exercised their leadership and administrative skills in a variety of contract management positions with Toronto-based performance companies, including, but not limited to: The Musical Stage Company/Outside the Marchas Production Manager on the new Dr. Silver: A Celebration of Life; Toronto Dance Theatre as Technical Director for their 2017 tour to Colombia with HouseMix; MT Space as Festival Production Manager for the IMPACT Festival in 2015 & 2017; Project Humanity as Production Manager/Tour Manager on Freedom Singer in 2017 & 2018; The Dietrich Group as Production Manager/Stage Manager/Tour Manager on over 10 productions and tours from 2012-2018; Kemi Contemporary Dance Projects as Production Manager/Stage Manager/Tour Manager for Idiom, Passage & Sous un projecteur in 2015 & Kitly Bender in 2017 & 2018; Crow’s Theatre & Porte Parole as Technical Director for The Watershedin 2017; Kaeja d’Dance Tour Production Manager for their 25th Anniversary Season in 2005 and tour to Mexico in 2016; ProArteDanza as Production Manager/Production Stage Manager for their Fall 2013 season.
Financial
- Oz has over 15 years’ experience developing and managing production budgets for projects ranging from $5,000 – $650,000+; including IMPACT Festival 2015 & 2017, Freedom Singer with Project: Humanity, multiple Dora Award-winning production Kittly-Bender with Kemi Contemporary Dance Projects, and numerous high-level corporate events, including an immersive dinner party set in an old warehouse, where over $35,000 of technical equipment was brought in for a one-night-only party.
Administrative
- Oz has created production schedules for small fringe shows; large scale dance, theatre and musicals; and well as two instances of a week-long summer festival that featured 10 venues, 30+ shows, and welcomed companies from across Canada and around the world;
- Navigated many challenging people management situations, including: interpersonal conflict resolution, staff discipline, and employment terminations; priding themself on their emotional intelligence, empathy and capacity to keep open communication between individual members of the production team, even in very difficult situations;
- Knowledge and understanding of union and association rules and regulations; various roles have demanded that Oz quickly familiarize himself with local union regulations and rules, depending on the venue and city, this includes C.T.A., D.O.T., and A.D.C. rules and regulations; and venue specific I.A.T.S.E. contracts.
Production
- Oz was the Festival Production Manager for the IMPACT Festival (Kitchener) in 2015 and 2017, overseeing the execution of the multi-venue, 30+ show festival and over 30 technical staff;
- Developed broad venue experience working in over 50 facilities both locally, nationally and internationally; understanding the unique touring needs of companies both from Canada and abroad;
- Substantial experience working in found spaces, including: small art galleries such as VideoFag, former film studios, outdoor spaces, barns, old churches, and the Hearn Generating Station before it was transformed for Luminato;
- Planned work-back schedules and managed a team of designers and production staff to meet deadlines while maintaining positive morale across the team;
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills: adept at comprehending and translating artistic vision into practical terms that provide clarity and direction for team members; mediated a variety of difficult discussions about the limitation of budgets, helping directors, choreographers and artistic directors understand what is possible while still keeping the artistic vision intact;
- As a freelancer for the past 11 years, developed excellent time management and multitasking skills while working with several different productions simultaneously and still delivering exceptional work quality.
